Joe Maxwell spent the last 24 years dedicating himself to crafting 18th century reproduction furniture. He was fortunate enough to spend 19 of those years working for one of the finest high-end shops in the country. While there, he was able to develop and hone his skills, creating hundreds of pieces from exact reproductions to custom pieces. Among those pieces he built were chest of drawers, blanket chests, high boys, low boys, dutch cupboards, linen presses, 4-poster beds, nightstands, and mirrors. They included many different styles such as Queen Anne, Chippendale, William & Mary, and Shaker. Joe also completed many restoration projects on antique furniture. This experience was "an education unto itself." It provided the opportunity to disassemble period furniture and learn the early techniques employed by 18th century cabinetmakers.

In December of 2005, Joe decided to dedicate himself full-time to his own business--Maxwell's Woodworking & Design.

"As a one-man shop, I am able to keep my expenses down and at the same time offer personal attention to each customer. It also affords me the opportunity to maintain a high standard of quality craftsmanship that customers deserve when investing in a piece of fine furniture. While we are slightly more expensive than mass-produced furniture, my furniture is built using time-tested techniques that will outlast industry made furniture and will bring you and your family enjoyment now and for generations to come. My furniture can easily be added to your current antique collection without standing out as new. It's my fortune to have a wife who enjoys designing and painting in a style that compliments my work. (See portfolio and current collection.) I enjoy working with each customer to help them design the exact piece they want whether it is to fit in a certain area, meet specific needs or to reproduce existing pieces. All my furniture is signed and dated."

Joe is a juried member of the PA Guild of Craftsmen. His shop is located on a small farm in Chester County, just 60 minutes from Philadelphia, Harrisburg, and Baltimore. You can purchase pieces from his current collection, select pieces from the portfolio, or design a specific piece to fit your needs.
